Estimates only. Figures on this page use published plan-year values and the details you enter. They are not a quote, an offer of coverage, or a determination of eligibility. Your final premium and any tax credit are confirmed at enrollment with the carrier or HealthCare.gov. Everything is calculated in your browser; nothing you type is sent to us or anyone else.

What this assumes

  • A guide to the common qualifying events, not an eligibility decision. Only the Marketplace can confirm eligibility.
  • Most Special Enrollment Periods run 60 days from the qualifying event.
  • A loss of coverage usually also lets you apply in the 60 days before it happens, which prevents a gap.
  • Voluntarily dropping coverage you could have kept, or losing it for non-payment, does not qualify.
  • You will normally need documents that prove the event. Gather them early.
  • Open Enrollment for 2027 coverage starts November 1, 2026.

Common questions

What counts as a qualifying life event for health insurance?

Common ones are losing health coverage, getting married, having or adopting a child, moving to a new ZIP code or county with prior coverage, and gaining citizenship or lawful presence.

How long is a Special Enrollment Period?

Usually 60 days from the event. For a loss of coverage you can also apply up to 60 days before it ends, which avoids a gap.

Does quitting my plan or not paying count as losing coverage?

No. Dropping coverage you could have kept, or losing it for not paying premiums, does not qualify.

When is ACA Open Enrollment in Arizona?

Open Enrollment on HealthCare.gov for 2027 coverage starts November 1, 2026. Outside it, you need a qualifying event to enroll.

Does moving to Arizona let me sign up for health insurance?

Often, yes. Moving to a new ZIP code or county can open a Special Enrollment Period, as long as you had qualifying health coverage before the move. A move without prior coverage usually does not qualify, with a few exceptions. You generally have 60 days from the move to pick a plan on HealthCare.gov.

What proof do I need for a Special Enrollment Period?

HealthCare.gov may ask for documents that show the event and its date: a letter from your employer or insurer showing when coverage ended, a marriage certificate, a birth record, or a lease or utility bill for a move. Gather them early, because your coverage can be held up until they are accepted.

When does coverage start after a Special Enrollment Period?

Usually on the first day of the month after you pick a plan. A few events work differently: coverage for a new baby or adopted child can start on the date of the birth or adoption. Picking a plan before your old coverage ends helps you avoid a gap.

Does aging off a parent’s health plan count as a qualifying event?

Yes. Aging off a parent’s plan is a loss of coverage, so it opens a 60-day Special Enrollment Period. You can also apply up to 60 days before the coverage ends, which lets the new plan start without a gap. Your parent’s employer or insurer can tell you the exact end date.

What if I missed the 60-day window?

Then you usually wait for Open Enrollment, which for 2027 coverage starts November 1, 2026. If your income is low enough for AHCCCS, Arizona’s Medicaid program, you can apply any time of year. Call us before you assume you are out of options, because another event may still qualify.
