What to know before you choose

Most dental coverage sorts care into three groups. Preventive care, cleanings, exams and x-rays, is usually covered at a high percentage. Basic care, such as fillings and simple extractions, is partly covered. Major care, such as crowns, bridges, root canals and dentures, is covered at a lower percentage and often only after a waiting period. Most plans also have a yearly maximum, the most the plan will pay in a year.

Plans come in a few styles. PPO dental plans have a network but let you see other dentists at a higher cost. HMO style plans keep you in network with lower costs. Indemnity plans let you see any dentist, but you may pay up front and be reimbursed. Dental discount plans are not insurance at all; they give you reduced prices at participating dentists.

The questions that matter: Is your dentist in the network? What is the waiting period for the work you know you need? What is the yearly maximum, and will it cover a crown or a set of dentures? Viola gets those answers before you buy, so a plan that looked fine on paper does not leave you paying for a crown yourself.

If you are on Medicare, she also compares what a Medicare Advantage plan's dental benefit covers in 2027 with a stand-alone dental plan, because the Advantage benefit may be enough for cleanings but not for major work. For families and employers, she can also look at group dental options.

Once you are enrolled, she makes sure you know what is covered and when waiting periods end, so you can schedule the bigger work at the right time. Coverage is subject to carrier approval.

Who it fits

You do not have dental coverage through work, you are on Original Medicare, or your Medicare Advantage dental benefit will not cover the work you need.

Does Medicare cover dental care?

Original Medicare does not cover routine dental care like cleanings, fillings or dentures. Many Medicare Advantage plans include some dental benefits, but yearly maximums can be low for major work. A stand-alone dental plan can fill the gap. Viola compares both for you.

FAQ

Dental Insurance: common questions

Does Medicare cover dental care?

Original Medicare does not cover routine dental care like cleanings, fillings or dentures. Many Medicare Advantage plans include some dental benefits, but yearly maximums can be low for major work. A stand-alone dental plan can fill the gap. Viola compares both for you.

Are there waiting periods on dental insurance?

Often, yes, for basic and major work like fillings, crowns and dentures. Preventive care such as cleanings usually has no waiting period. Waiting periods vary by plan, so check them against the work you need.

What is a dental plan's yearly maximum?

The most the plan will pay for your care in a year. Once you reach it, you pay the rest. Low yearly maximums can run out quickly on crowns, root canals or implants.

Is a dental discount plan the same as dental insurance?

No. A discount plan gives reduced prices at participating dentists for a membership fee. It is not insurance and does not pay claims, but it can make sense for some people.

Does dental insurance cover implants and dentures?

Many plans cover dentures, and some cover implants, usually as major services. Major work often comes with a waiting period and a higher share for you to pay, and it all counts toward the yearly maximum.

Some plans exclude implants entirely. If you know you need one, tell Viola first, so she compares plans that actually include it.

How does dental insurance split the cost of care?

Many plans pay a different share for each type of care. Preventive care like cleanings and X-rays is often covered at or near the full cost, basic work like fillings at a lower share, and major work like crowns and dentures at a lower share still.

The exact percentages differ by plan, so Viola lines them up next to the work your dentist has recommended.

What is a missing tooth clause?

It is a rule in some dental plans that will not pay to replace a tooth that was already missing before your coverage started. That can mean no help with a bridge, implant or denture for that gap.

Not every plan has one. If you are missing teeth now, ask about this before you enroll, and Viola will check the plan wording for you.

Can I buy dental insurance on my own without an employer?

Yes. Individual dental plans are sold directly to people and families, including retirees on Medicare, and many can be bought at any time of year rather than only during an enrollment window.

Viola compares networks, waiting periods and yearly maximums, and checks whether your own dentist is in network before you choose.

Do I have to use a network dentist?

It depends on the plan type. A dental PPO lets you see any dentist but pays more when you stay in network. A dental HMO usually only covers care from its own dentists, often in exchange for a lower premium.

If you want to keep your current dentist in Chandler or the East Valley, Viola checks that first.
