National Funeral Directors Association 2023 national medians. They are not Arizona prices and they leave out cemetery costs. A local funeral home price list is the better figure.

Estimates only. Figures on this page use published plan-year values and the details you enter. They are not a quote, an offer of coverage, or a determination of eligibility. Your final premium and any tax credit are confirmed at enrollment with the carrier or HealthCare.gov. Everything is calculated in your browser; nothing you type is sent to us or anyone else.

What this assumes

  • The optional starting figures are NFDA 2023 national medians: $8,300 for a funeral with viewing and burial, $6,280 with viewing and cremation.
  • Those medians exclude cemetery plots, opening and closing the grave, a headstone or marker, flowers and obituaries. Add those separately.
  • They are national, not Arizona, figures, and they are from 2023. A price list from a local funeral home is the better number.
  • Final expense life insurance is subject to underwriting and carrier approval.
  • An estimate from published figures and the numbers you enter, not a quote or an eligibility decision.

Common questions

How much does a funeral cost?

The National Funeral Directors Association’s 2023 study put the national median at $8,300 for a funeral with viewing and burial and $6,280 for one with viewing and cremation. Those medians leave out cemetery costs, and local prices differ, so ask an Arizona funeral home for its price list.

What is final expense insurance?

A smaller whole life policy meant to pay funeral costs and final bills. Some policies ask a few health questions; guaranteed issue policies ask none but usually cost more and may phase in the full benefit.

Do funeral homes have to give me a price list?

Yes. Under the Federal Trade Commission’s Funeral Rule, funeral homes must give you an itemized price list when you ask about arrangements in person, and give prices by phone if you ask.

What can final expense insurance be used for?

Anything your family needs. The benefit is paid to the beneficiary you name, not to the funeral home, so it can cover the funeral, burial or cremation, medical bills, debts or travel for family. Your beneficiary decides how to use it, which is why it helps to tell them your wishes.

How much final expense insurance should I get?

Add up the funeral, burial or cremation, cemetery costs and any final bills, then subtract what you already have set aside. That difference is the amount this calculator shows. Many people round it up a little, because prices can rise between now and when the policy pays.

What should I add on top of the funeral home’s price?

The NFDA 2023 medians leave out the cemetery plot, opening and closing the grave, a headstone or marker, flowers and obituaries. If you plan a burial, add those separately in the calculator. They can be a large share of the total, so ask the cemetery for its prices too.

Is a preneed funeral plan the same as final expense insurance?

No. A preneed plan is arranged with one funeral home and pays for the goods and services you choose there. Final expense insurance is a life insurance policy that pays your beneficiary, who can use it at any funeral home or for other bills. Some families use one, some use both.

Does cremation cost less than burial?

Usually. In the NFDA 2023 national medians, a funeral with viewing and cremation came to about $2,020 less than one with viewing and burial, before any cemetery costs. Burial also adds a plot and a marker. Local prices vary, so compare price lists from Arizona funeral homes.

Does final expense insurance expire?

Final expense policies are usually small whole life policies, so coverage lasts for life as long as premiums are paid, and the premium normally stays level. That is different from term life, which ends after a set period. Policies are subject to underwriting and carrier approval.
